Guided Hiking Experiences

From April to October inclusive, I am delighted to respond to an increase in demand for guided hiking experiences - low-level walks exploring the stunning landscapes of either the Cairngorms National Park or Highland Perthshire. These experiences allow you the opportunity to learn about the history, natural history and culture of these beautiful places whilst enjoying some truly delightful hiking amid breathtaking scenery.

Your hike will be led by me, a highly experienced and locally-based Winter Mountain Leader. I have had the privilege of living and working for many years in both Highland Perthshire and, latterly, the Cairngorms National Park. Coupled with extensive experience guiding a diverse and multi-national range of clients, and a wealth of knowledge, I am ideally-placed to offer you not only some beautiful hiking, but some truly unique local insights.

The story of the salmon

Discover the incredible journey of the Atlantic salmon during a hike with me, a former fisheries scientist, starting and finishing in the delightful town of Pitlochry. This small town, nestling in the hills of Southern Perthshire, has been a popular tourist destination since Victorian times, and makes a great base from which to explore the surrounding woodlands, rivers and lochs. As part of your hike, I will share some of my extensive knowledge and provide unique insights into the lives of these incredible fish, based on many years of my working with them.

Not keen on fish?! Hikes in this area are particularly attractive during autumn amid the stunning display of vibrant colours and light at this time of year. So come along and enjoy the annual show of beauty that is autumn in Highland Perthshire … and I promise not to mention fish!

Start / Finish location: Pitlochry.

Half- and full-day hikes available.

Enjoy a fabulous hike on part of the Balmoral Estate, learning about Queen Victoria’s family, life, and lasting legacy, and the role of Balmoral in the present day, all amid the spectacular scenery of Royal Deeside.

Please note that your hike will not include a visit to Balmoral Castle itself, although this could be undertaken independently whilst you are in the area. Balmoral Castle can be closed to the public at certain times of the year. Access to the wider Balmoral Estate, however, is generally unaffected. Depending on the exact route we choose for our hike, we may see Balmoral Castle from a nearby viewpoint.

Further information

Experience required: To make the most of your time with me, you should have a reasonable level of fitness.

Equipment required: To enjoy even a low-level hike, being properly equipped is important to prevent you getting cold or wet in Scotland’s often changeable weather. Please make sure you have the following items:

  • Sturdy footwear (with good grip and ankle support, not trainers);
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers;
  • An extra warm layer;
  • Hat & gloves;
  • Small rucksack;
  • Food and drink / snacks;
  • Insect repellent; and
  • Any personal medication.

Optional items:

  • Sunglasses, sun cream and sunhat (you never know!)
  • Walking poles; and
  • Camera.

I recommend you wear trekking trousers on your lower body and a baselayer on your upper body. These are quick-drying, breathable, and comfortable. Jeans and garments made from cotton are not suitable for hiking in Scotland.

Joining instructions: These will be discussed and agreed with you and your group as required.
