Introduction to Mountain Navigation (1-day course)

Of all the skills needed to explore the British mountains safely, the ability to navigate effectively is one of the most important. This course is ideal if you are starting from the beginning, and gives you a great "toolbox" of techniques to take away and practise. Although we cover a lot during this intensive day, we start with the basics and take a very progressive approach, all taught in context to try and get you thinking along the lines of "using the right technique(s) at the right time". We will look at:

  • Tools of the trade
  • Mapping options available to hill walkers, pros and cons, scales and keys
  • Setting the map, with and without a compass
  • Navigation "legs", the importance of having a plan, "hand railing" linear features and ticking off features
  • An introduction to contour lines
  • The basics of using a compass (measuring distance off a map, taking and following a bearing)
  • Estimating distance travelled by pacing and timing
  • Identifying and using "catching features"
  • Grid references, particularly in relation to emergency procedures

Scheduled courses, available for individuals to book as part of an open group:

  • Wednesday 5th May 2021
  • Wednesday 19th May 2021

£80 per person (minimum 2, maximum 4 participants)

If you wish to book this as a private course on dates to suit you, this can be accommodated throughout the summer (maximum 4 participants):

  • 1 person or 2 people: £160
  • 3 people: £180
  • 4 people: £200

Mountain Navigation Skills (2-day course)

This is an extended version of our very popular 1-day course. The first day follows the same format as the 1-day course, while the second day allows more time to really consolidate the skills covered on the first day. Depending on your prior experience, we may also introduce you to one or two more advanced navigation techniques such as more detailed contour interpretation, and techniques such as “aiming off” and "dog legging".

Scheduled courses, available for individuals to book as part of an open group:

  • Saturday 24th to Sunday 25th April 2021

£160 per person (minimum 2, maximum 4 participants)

If you wish to book this as a private course on dates to suit you, this can be accommodated throughout the summer (maximum 4 participants):

  • 1 person or 2 people: £320
  • 3 people: £360
  • 4 people: £400

Hill & Mountain Skills (3-day course)

This course is designed for beginners to look at the basics of hill walking, enabling you, by the end of the course, to get out and explore the hills and mountains under your own steam whilst staying safe. We will cover:

  • What to wear
  • What to pack
  • How to plan a day out
  • Mountain weather
  • Mountain navigation
  • What to do in an emergency
  • Most importantly, we will be “learning by doing” whilst exploring some local hills and mountains!

Scheduled courses, available for individuals to book as part of an open group:

  • Saturday 1st to Monday 3rd May 2021

£240 per person (minimum 2, maximum 4 participants)

If you wish to book this as a private course on dates to suit you, this can be accommodated throughout the summer (maximum 4 participants):

  • 1 person or 2 people: £480
  • 3 people: £540
  • 4 people: £600

A full kit list will be provided at the time of booking. Course participants will need to supply most of their own kit.

Course participants will meet in Aviemore on the morning their course starts. This will allow time to discuss the day ahead and to allow the most suitable venue for the day to be chosen based on the weather forecast etc.

Course participants will need to have access to their own car to travel from Aviemore to the course venue each day. Whilst ordinarily we would encourage car sharing, this is contrary to current guidelines in relation to Covid-19 (Coronavirus).

Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
