Introduction to Mountain Navigation (1 day course)
Of all the skills needed to explore the British mountains safely, the ability to navigate effectively is one of the most important. This course is ideal if you are starting from the beginning. We look at maps and scales, map keys, setting the map, contours, the basics of using a compass (taking and following a bearing) and estimating distance travelled.
Intermediate Mountain Navigation (2 day course)
This course is ideal if you already know the basics of map reading, but want to learn more in order to increase your ability and confidence when it comes to exploring the mountains independently. We refresh the basics as per the “Introduction to Mountain Navigation” course, and extend this to include more advanced techniques such as detailed contour interpretation, “aiming off” and an introduction to relocation skills.
Hill & Mountain Skills (3 day course)
This course is designed for beginners to look at the basics of hill walking, enabling you, by the end of the course, to get out and explore the hills and mountains under your own steam whilst staying safe. We will discuss what to wear, what to pack, how to plan a day out, mountain weather, mountain navigation, and what to do in an emergency. We will be “learning by doing” whilst exploring some local hills and mountains.
